Why do you work in the world of language services?
I have always been very interested in literature: my mother taught me to read before I was three years old, and I have not stopped reading since. From a very young age, I enjoyed writing stories and poems, and English was my favourite subject at school. At secondary school, I studied French and Latin; the latter was my first contact with translation, and from then on, I knew that it was something I liked and was quite good at 😉. In fact, in 2015, I won second prize in the Asturias and Cantabria translation category of the Certamen Ciceronianum competition, organised by the Spanish Society of Classical Studies. What an honour! So, after completing my International Baccalaureate, I moved to Salamanca to study for a degree in Translation and Interpreting. I graduated in 2019 and haven’t stopped working in my field since.
Why do you only translate into European Spanish?
I was born and raised in Asturias, in northern Spain, and Spanish is my mother tongue. I believe that to translate, you need to have a thorough understanding of the cultural context of the target language, and no one is better than a professional native translator at capturing the essence of a message in their mother tongue.
Why should I work with you, rather than using Google Translate or ChatGPT?
Technology advances, and I use it to my advantage: I work with specialised translation software, such as Trados and memoQ, instead of using a typewriter or a sheet of parchment with a quill pen (although that would be much more stylish, wouldn’t it?). However, there is something that machines have not yet managed to replicate, and frankly, I don’t think they ever will: the human soul. If you want your readers and customers to feel emotionally engaged with your texts, the human factor is essential. What’s more, to put it bluntly, I can save you a lot of trouble. If you don’t believe me, just look at the evidence:
Oh, and let’s not forget about confidentiality. Your documents are safe with me, whereas anything you upload to ChatGPT or any other tool such as Google Translate or DeepL could end up in the wrong hands…
How does you organise your work?
Juggling my physical diary, Notion, Google Calendar, a thousand reminders in my phone notes and an almost unlimited supply of tea and coffee. Don’t worry: working to tight deadlines is my thing.
Isn't it lonely being a self-employed translator?
Not really. I like the freedom to organise myself, set my own pace and be my own boss. What’s more, even though I work alone, I have lots of colleagues to support me: I’m a member of the ITI (Institute of Translation and Interpreting) and Asetrad (Spanish Association of Translators, Proofreaders and Interpreters). In fact, I coordinate the Asturian branch of Asetrad, where I organise meetings with other translators to network and raise public awareness of our profession.
Finally, I have the best quality manager in my office, who accompanies me while I work and has no qualms about pointing out my mistakes (probably by knocking my cup off the table).
How do I know you’ll do a good job?
Good question! My priority is to offer quality services with a personal touch. So, if we work together, you can be sure that I will take the time to understand your needs and objectives, answer your questions, listen to you and apply your feedback, so that your texts, whether translations or copy, shine.
If you want tangible proof, I am a graduate in Translation and Interpreting from the University of Salamanca, one of the best in Spain in this discipline. I am a member of ITI and Asetrad, I complete more than 50 hours of continuous professional development each year, and I received first prize in the United Nations San Jerónimo Translation Contest in 2019 (student category). And to round off, what do you do when you're not translating?
I love reading and writing, so probably one of those options. I also really enjoy spending time in nature. Living in Asturias means being lucky enough to have both the beach and the mountains just a stone’s throw away, so on weekends you can find me hiking or walking… when the rain allows it.
