Why do you work in the world of language services?
I’ve always had a thing about words: my mum taught me to read before I was three and I haven’t stopped since. Since I was tiny I’ve loved writing stories and poems, and at primary school English was my favourite subject. At upper school, I studied French and Latin, and it was through the latter I first discovered translation. I knew I loved it right away, and I wasn’t bad at it either. In fact, in 2015 I won the the second prize for translation, for Asturias and Cantabria, in the Certamen Ciceronianum, presented by the Spanish Society of Classical Studies. That was an honour and a half. So, after studying the International Baccalaureate, I moved to Salamanca to study for a degree in Translation and Interpreting. I graduated in 2019, and haven’t stopped working in the translation world ever since.
Why do you only translate into European Spanish?
I was born and raised in Asturias, in the north of Spain, and Castillian Spanish is my mother tongue. I believe that, to translate well, you need to have a firm grip on the cultural context of the target language, and there’s nothing better than a native professional translator to capture the essence of a message in their mother tongue.
Why should I work with you, rather than using Google Translate or ChatGPT?
Technology’s always moving forwards, and I use that to my advantage: I work with specialised translation software, like Trados and memoQ, rather than using a typewriter or a sheet of parchment and a goose feather quill (although that would be far more stylish, wouldn’t it?). However, there’s one thing machines still can’t compete with, and frankly, I don’t think they ever will: the human soul. If you want your readers and customers to feel an emotional connection to your texts, you need it to be created by a human, And I can save you all kinds of headaches. Exhibit A:
Oh, and let’s not forget confidentiality. Your documents are safe with me, whilst anything you upload to ChatGPT, or any other tool like Google Translate or DeepL could end up in the wrong hands.
How does you organise your work?
I rely on a combination of a paper diary, Notion, Google Calender, millions of notes on my phone and unlimited supplies of tea and coffee. Don’t worry: working to tight deadlines is my thing.
Isn't it lonely being a self-employed translator?
Not really. I love having the freedom to organise my time, set my own pace and be my own boss. And, although I work alone, I have plenty of translator colleagues around me: I’m a member of the ITI (Institute of Translation and Interpreting) and Asetrad (Asociación Española de Traductores, Correctores e Intérpretes). In fact, I coordinate the Asturian branch of Asetrad, organising meetups with other translators, to network and help the general public understand our profession better.
Last but not least, I have the best quality control manager in my office, who keeps me company whilst I work and never hesitates to point out my mistakes (usually by knocking my mug off the desk).
How do I know you’ll do a good job?
Good question! My priority is to offer a friendly, good quality service. So, if we work together, rest assured I’ll take all the time necessary to get to grips with your needs and aims, answer your questions, listen to your feedback and put it into practice, so that your texts, whether translations or original copy, shine.

And to round off, what do you do when you're not translating?
I love reading and writing, so that’s probably how you’ll find me spending my time. I also love being in the great outdoors. Living in Asturias means I’m lucky enough to have both mountains and the coast just a stone’s throw away, so at the weekends you’ll find me on an adventure… Weather permitting. Contrary to what most people imagine when they think of Spain, it rains a lot here.
