Proofreading ensures that the text is free of spelling and typographical errors, i.e. that it is correct and does not contain typos or other technical errors. Some examples of elements that are corrected at this stage of revision are: grammatical errors, use of upper and lower case letters, use of italics, punctuation in dialogue, elimination of unnecessary lexical repetitions, etc.
Editing goes one step further, delving deeper into the text to make it as clear, concise and coherent as possible, without interfering with the author’s voice. For example, convoluted sentences are rewritten to make them more readable, vocabulary is adjusted to suit the register, phrases in a paragraph are rearranged to improve the rhythm, etc.
In 2025, I took the Editing and Proofreading Course offered by Cursiva and Pompeu Fabra University, where I learned the ins and outs of editing proofreading. Here you can see a sample of my work.
